Adopt
a statue
A project aimed at promoting the historical and artistic heritage of Milan Cathedral.
“Adopt a Statue” is the fundraising project launched in February 2020 by the Veneranda Fabbrica Del Duomo di Milano with the aim of contributing to supporting activities to safeguard, enhance and protect the Cathedral’s artistic heritage, giving new life to some of its sculptures through beneficial restoration activities.
The initiative is supported by companies who, through their donations, can ‘adopt’ a statue, helping to finance its cleaning, restoration and maintenance.
When the work is complete, the companies can exhibit the sculptures at their premises. FNM has decided to participate in the project because of its strong bond with the Milan and Lombardy area and its citizens “Adopt a Statue” has also been possible thanks to the collaboration with the Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Department of the Metropolitan City of Milan. Bearded Saint with Book
The statue, carved in Candoglia marble, depicts an elderly man with a long bipartite beard, a typical habit of a monk whose cape also wraps around the figure at the front.
The ‘intense expression of the face is rendered by the particularly high brow arch, pronounced cheekbone, and few but significant lines that mark the mature age. In his hand he holds an open book, an attribute reserved for Saints and Prophets. The circular-shaped base recalls other well-known and celebrated examples of humanistic sculpture from the Sforza period.
The total lack of inscriptions on the statue prevents a more precise attribution. The particular dimensions might suggest an early placement on an altar in the Cathedral; the state of deterioration before restoration indicates a later placement on the outside of the Cathedral, but in a position protected from the weather.

The work was shown during the event “EXEMPLA 1976. Handicrafts and Ecology,” an international handicrafts fair held in Munich, in its then dilapidated state, to raise awareness of the delicate and difficult task of the workers of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo in preserving the Cathedral’s artistic assets.
