FNM: alwais on to move

Ferrovie Nord Milano (now FNM) was created in 1877 to build and operate the railway lines in the Lombardy region. The railway network was developed in the North-West of Lombardy to connect the city of Milan with the towns of Novara, Varese, Laveno, Como and Erba-Asso, by expanding the existing lines and acquiring additional lines.

In 1985 the Company was transformed into a holding Company (to coordinate the technical, economic and financial aspects of the companies of the Group) with two operational subsidiaries: Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio, for railway activities, and Ferrovie Nord Milano Autoservizi, for bus services.

In 1993 the Ferrovie Nord Milano Group acquired the right to manage the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo railway line and some bus lines within the province of Brescia.

In 1997, the first section of the Milan S – rail link was opened to connect the Certosa-Bovisa and the Milan Porta Venezia stations.

In May 1999, FNM initiated the Malpensa Express rail service up to the Malpensa 2000 airport.

In 2001, the Group launched a cargo service route between Melzo and Zeebrugge (Belgium), which marked the liberalisation of the rail freight transportation in Italy thanks to the FNME-Cargo Division. Then FNM created a partnership with Telecom Italia, which resulted in the foundation of NordCom to operate in the field of Information and Communication Technology.

In 2003, the railway business area was redesigned and the cargo and local transport business units were transferred to Ferrovie Nord Cargo and Ferrovie Nord Milano Trasporti respectively, thus separating the network management (which remained under FNME) and the management of railway service, as required by the legislation in view of the liberalisation of the sector.

Over the same year, Nord Energia was set up in partnership with AET (Azienda Elettrica del Ticinese), while in 2004, with the creation of SEMS the Group entered the market of sustainable mobility.

In 2006 the reorganisation of the FNM Group was completed, with an expanded role and a new corporate identity.
